Brisbane born freelance illustrator Lauren Carney is the epitome of a real life “cartoon girl.” Her most recent artworks celebrate relationships, the body within spaces, movement, shadows and colour. They harbour a sense of play and wonder, exploring imaginative worlds and quirky character scenarios within each.

For this project Lauren created two whimsical maps of Karingal Hub.

What was something of interest you discovered about Frankston while researching the concept for your artwork?

I fell in totally in love with Frankston during the research stage. Frankston’s infamous coast is the highlight for me. The palette used in my artwork was based on the seaside colours.

For example, the blue buildings and sandy ground tones were picked from the shoreline, while the the electric yellow, red and pink tones were specifically selected based on the cute huts on Ranelagh Beach. Susono, a city in Shizuoka, Japan is Frankston’s sister city. There are a few fun references to this found in site 9’s Map. Happy hunting!

What message do you hope your art will bring to the community at Karingal Hub?

‘Collective Happiness’ was the theme of the artworks. The designs are a patchwork of people from all backgrounds doing something that brings them joy. Karingal Hub is a fun destination for people to go to the gym, shop, see a movie, or dine with a friend. I hope this cartoon snap shot conveys a sense of Frankston’s thriving community, having an all round great time.
